Ferric Ammonium Citrate Market

Ferric Ammonium Citrate Market Size, Share & Industry Analysis, By Source (Chemical Synthesis, Pharmaceutical-Grade Production, Contract Manufacturing Organizations (CMOs), Research and Development Laboratories), By End-User (Pharmaceutical Industry, Hospitals & Clinics., Research Institutions, Illicit Drug Market.) and Forecast, 2025-2035

The Ferric Ammonium Citrate market is witnessing a CAGR of 5.5% during the forecast period of 2025-2035. Ferric ammonium citrate (FAC) is a soluble complex salt, commonly found in a yellowish-brown to red solid form with a slight ammonia smell. It is prepared by the reaction of ferric hydroxide with citric acid and ammonia, leading to two major forms: brown and green, which are light-sensitive and deliquescent.

In the food sector, FAC is Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS) by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and is permitted for use as a nutrient supplement, especially as an iron fortifier in infant formula and other products. Its use is regulated by good manufacturing practices to maintain safety and effectiveness.

Medically, FAC is a supplement for iron used to correct iron deficiency  anemia in animals and human beings. The fact that its use can rebuild iron reserves positions it as an important ingredient in many therapeutic agents.

Apart from its nutritional uses, FAC is also applied to blueprinting and as an animal feed additive. Its use in blueprinting takes advantage of its light sensitivity, and in animal nutrition, it is used as an anticaking agent in salt products, with the maximum allowed levels not more than 25 parts per million in final products.

Though widely used, occupational exposure to FAC must be handled with caution owing to possible health hazards. Although no specific exposure limits have been set, following safe work practices is necessary to reduce risks of dust inhalation or skin contact hazards.
