Benzydamine Market

Benzydamine is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) with analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and local anesthetic activity, which is commonly used for the treatment of inflammatory disorders of the oropharyngeal area. Synthesis of benzydamine is achieved by the reaction of N-benzyl derivatives of methyl anthranilate with nitrous acid, resulting in the formation of N-nitroso derivatives. Reduction of the latter gives a hydrazine intermediate, which cyclizes spontaneously to give benzydamine. This synthetic route provides high purity benzydamine that can be used in pharmaceutical applications.

In the clinical environment, benzydamine is used in the management of conditions like gingivitis, stomatitis, glossitis, aphthous ulcers, and inflammation following dental surgery. Its use also covers the treatment of pharyngitis, tonsillitis, and mucositis caused by radiation therapy or intubation. The mechanism of action of the drug involves weak inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis and stabilization of cell membranes, which helps in its anti-inflammatory action. Benzydamine also has local anesthetic activity through the inhibition of voltage-gated sodium channels, helping to relieve pain from inflammatory conditions.

The pharmacokinetic profile of benzydamine suggests low systemic absorption when used topically, which makes it a good choice for local treatment with less risk of systemic side effects. Products like mouthwashes, sprays, and gels are easily available, enabling direct application to the affected areas. The standard concentration for oral solutions is 0.15% w/v, and for topical gels, it is 3% w/w. Patients should use the mouthwash by rinsing 30 seconds every 1.5 to 3 hours, while the spray may be used 4 to 8 times during the same time frame.

The side effects of benzydamine are mostly mild and may be oral numbness, dryness of mouth, and disturbance of taste sensation. Hypersensitivity reactions in the form of rash or bronchospasm can occur, though rarely, especially in asthmatic patients or those who are allergic to NSAIDs. Prolonged administration for more than seven days under uncontrolled medical care is not advised to avoid adverse effects.
